2. Understanding Wallet Addresses & Derivation Paths
What is a Wallet Address?
A wallet address is a unique identifier (like an account number) that allows you to receive cryptocurrency. Each blockchain network has its own address format:
Example Addresses:
Ethereum/EVM: 0x742d35Cc6634C0532925a3b844Bc9e7595f...
Bitcoin: 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa
Solana: 7EYnhQoR9YM3N7UoaKRoA44Uy8JeaZV3qyouov...
What is a Derivation Path?
A derivation path is a formula used to generate multiple wallet addresses from a single seed phrase. This follows the BIP-44 standard, allowing your 12 or 24-word seed phrase to create addresses for different cryptocurrencies.
Derivation Path Format:
m / purpose' / coin_type' / account' / change / address_index
Example paths used in Satu Wallet:
- m/44'/60'/0'/0/0 - Ethereum & EVM chains (ETH, BNB, MATIC, etc.)
- m/44'/501'/0'/0' - Solana (SOL)
- m/44'/0'/0'/0/0 - Bitcoin (BTC)
- m/44'/2'/0'/0/0 - Litecoin (LTC)
- m/44'/144'/0'/0/0 - XRP Ledger
What is a Seed Phrase?
A seed phrase (also called recovery phrase or mnemonic) is a series of 12 or 24 words that serves as the master key to your wallet. From this single phrase, all your wallet addresses across different blockchains are generated.
Security Warning:
- Never share your seed phrase with anyone
- Satu Wallet will NEVER ask for your seed phrase
- Store your seed phrase offline in a secure location
- Anyone with your seed phrase has full access to your funds
Public Key vs Private Key
- Public Key: Can be shared freely. Used to generate your wallet address and verify signatures.
- Private Key: Must be kept secret. Used to sign transactions and prove ownership of funds.
